Epson Expression 10000XL- Graphic Arts Scanner

The Epson Expression 10000XL graphic arts edition is a large-format flatbed scanner designed for graphic artists and other high-end users. With its high 2,400 dpi scanning resolution, 48-bit internal color depth, and 3.8 optical density, images are crisp and accurate. The six-line alternated color CCD and auto focus optics system help to ensure that you get the best scans possible. Scan speeds are as high as 2.7 ms/line (at 1,200 dpi), while an optional automatic document feeder allows you to scan multiple sheets at a time. You can zoom in 1% increments anywhere from 50% to 200%.

The software bundle includes a variety of applications to help you easily achieve the best scan results possible. Titles include EPSON Scan 2.2, MonacoEZcolor with reflective IT8 Target, Photoshop Elements 2, and ABBYY FineReader Sprint OCR. The 10000XL connects to your computer via its standard USB and Firewire ports, and an optional network adapter lets you use the scanner as a network device. The AC 100-120V power supply consumes less than 55 watts during normal operation and about 6 watts while in sleep mode. Compatible with both PC and Mac operating platforms, the 10000XL comes backed with a one-year limited warranty.

Customer Review: Epson 10000XL
I found the scanner to be packaged well and delivered safely. It worked from the second I plugged it in. One feature I like is that the cover stays open when you lift it and it expands so that thicker items can be placed on the screen. The 17" wide screen makes scanning large paintings as composites a piece of cake. I was surprised that it takes so long to scan at high resolutions though. Something I did not know when I bought it. I think I would like to have known the scanning times at various resolutions. This should be part of the tech specs on all scanners for comparisons. I scan paintings for prints in high resolution using PS-CS4 and then downsample for printing.
Customer Review: Very good large format scanner
I would have given this 5 stars if it had had a page feeder. Although in my case not a necessity, still it would have been a nice feature given the price of this unit. It's EXPENSIVE! The scanner itself does exactly what I require of it. It takes great scans of large items and offers many filter and scanning options including software that permits multiple scans without requiring one to call up the Twain driver after every scan. I have over 300 LP covers that I'd like to scan and now I can do each in one pass. It will be invaluable for me to be able to keep up with the flow of my daughter's countless larger art pieces (yes I'm a doting digital dad). The Epson XL10000 is just what the doctor ordered. (FYI: My older Epson Perfection series scanner came with software to permit multiple scans when installed on an XP box, but on my new Vista box, this feature is no longer supported by Epson. I did manage to find software to enable multiple scans. Since I'm on the XP box at the moment and not on the Vista box, I don't recall the software product name, but think it might have been something like Smart Scan.) Epson makes great (if overpriced) scanners and printers. I've never had a problem with any Epson device in the 20 years I've been using them. If you need the size and can afford the cost of admission, this is your ticket to great large format scans.

It is quite well known that the working of the computer is pulled by hardware and software. One can define computer hardware as the electronic, magnetic, and electric devices that carry out the computing functions. Hardware is the physical components of the computer like microprocessor, hard disks, RAM, and motherboard. The peripheral devices such as monitor, mouse, keyboard, printer, and speakers can also be included in the list of hardware parts. The programs that run on the computers like Windows, C++, and Photoshop are the software parts of the computer. A good example for an easy understanding of hardware-software definition is music CDs. The actual compact disk is the hardware, while the songs and music in the CD are the software parts.

There is another way to define computer hardware. Hardware devices are the executors of the commands provided by software applications. For example, let us see what happens when you click the print button of the web browsing software. The software application provides a command to the processor, which is the central part of all computer hardware. Processor in turn checks for an attached printer. If the printer is ready, the software will get a positive response from the processor. Then the software application provides instruction to the printer via the processor to print the web page. In that sense, hardware parts are the foot soldiers and software applications are the commanders in the digital operation that takes place within a computer.

The main player of computer hardware is undoubtedly the microprocessor. It is the sun in the solar system of computer hardware devices. It is the central component and all other components work around it. It is an integrated chip on which a number of functions are incorporated. Two specifications determine its efficiency. One is its processing speed, which is measured in gigahertz. The other is its bit rate. Commonly available processors are 32 bit and 64 bit. The bit rate is a measure of the efficiency of a processor to carry out multiple operations at the same time.

One cannot define computer hardware without mentioning the two types of memory used in computers. One is permanent memory. It refers to the magnetic storage capacity of hard disk. It is measured in gigabytes. The second is RAM or random access memory. This memory is able to store data only when the computer is switched on. The memory will lose all the data when the computer is switched off.

Another important product that one should mention when one defines computer hardware is motherboard. It is the electric and electronic circuit board on which all the other components are inserted. There are several other kinds of products such as sound card, video card, network card, and modem that complete the hardware spectrum.
